How well do people who order genetic testing on their own understand the results?

A new article published by members of our groups examines consumer understanding of test results and related factors.

In their article “How Well Do Customers of Direct-to-Consumer Personal Genomic Testing Services Comprehend Genetic Test Results?: Findings from the Impact of Personal Genomics Study,” Ostergren et a describe a study in which participants were given sample genetic results reports and responses to comprehension questions were analyzed. A high level of overall understanding was reported with the highest values being found for statin medications and carrier screening summary results. People who performed well on these measures were good with working and manipulating numbers; had higher levels of education; and higher genetic knowledge. These results suggest that the information given to consumers who participate in such test taking need to be presented in a way that account for these different background factors.
